Why do we teach self-regulation to very young children?
Self-regulation is a universal skill necessary for academic success, emotional control, and healthy social interactions. This program—based soundly on cognitive-behavioral psychology—is designed to teach young children how to develop self-esteem and appropriate social skills, as well as how to overcome anger, anxiety, and frustration. Self- regulation is a cornerstone of childhood development that spans across all domains of behavior.
As the term “self-regulation” suggests, this framework focuses on teaching children how to regulate their own behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. The self-regulation training system divides these skills into three categories: physical, emotional, and cognitive. Children enrolled in this program will move progressively through each of the three skill-training categories.

Here is a short list of research findings that support teaching young children about self-regulation:
- Young children who engage in self-regulation learn more and go further in their education (Blair & Diamond).
- Children can develop foundational skills for self-regulation in the first five years of life (Blair & Diamond, 2008).
- Children’s intentional self–regulation is a significant predictor of school success (Zimmerman, 1994).
- The ability to self-regulate helps children get along better with teachers and peers (Mcknown, Bumbiner Russo & Lipton, 2009).
- Self-regulation predicted higher achievement in kindergarten reading and math (Blair & Razza, 2007).
- Poor self-regulation has been linked to higher rates of expulsion, most in preschool classrooms (Gilliam & Shahar, 2006).
- Children beginning kindergarten with higher social-competence are more likely to be successful at transitioning into school, developing positive attitudes about school, and achieving higher grades in elementary school (Denham, 2006).
